In Hockey Our Words Matter: How To Be An Ally (2022)

Teammates, especially BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) players, more often than not are victims of racial slurs, derogatory comments, inappropriate gestures and other indignities by players, coaches, hockey administrators and spectators. Treating them less than because of how they look or where they’re from hurts and causes harm even if it’s not always visible. As a former Black hockey player who experienced racism, it’s disheartening to be judged as inferior or a lesser human being by others who find it difficult to accept, respect and value differences.
