Hockey: Barriers to Crossing the Color Line: The Neglected Story of the Pioneering Players

 African-Americans have had a long history in the field of sports. During the mid 20th Century, black athletes became pioneers in sports such as basketball, football, and baseball. During this time, seemingly unknown by the vast majority, black athletes, men and women, became the forerunners of sports that were seen as non-traditional for African-Americans. Many blacks attained success not only in basketball and football but also in hockey, golf, and bicycling. Today, many young African American athletes not only participate in a wide variety of sports, but also fill non-traditional roles and positions within their field.During a time when black athletes are numerically and visually overrepresented in sports such as basketball, football, and track and field at the professional level, why aren’t other black athletes participating near or at this same level in professional hockey?
